Patients with end-stage chronic kidney failure should be registered in Turkish Organ and Tissue Information System (TDOS) developed by Ministry of Health to receive deceased-donor kidney transplant. Therefore, the patients should apply to a facility where kidney transplant is performed.
Evaluation of patients in deceased-donor kidney waiting list is identical to patients who will receive a living-donor kidney transplant. Unless any contraindication is reported in examinations, the patient is recorded to the system.
Since the time that may elapse until a deceased-donor kidney is found is not certain, results of previous tests and examinations cannot be taken into consideration. Therefore, tests and examinations of the patients in waiting list should be repeated at certain intervals. You should absolutely notify the transplantation center about any change in your phone number and address.
No certain waiting time can be guaranteed for the patients who are placed on a deceased-donor organ waiting list. National Organ and Tissue Transplant uses specific criteria to match a deceased-donor organ with a patient. Sometimes, an organ is immediately found for a patient, who was recently recorded to the system, while other patients may need to wait for many years in the deceased-donor organ list. Raising public awareness and increasing number of organ donations will shorten the waiting period and many people in waiting list will regain their health through the donated organs.
When You Are Asked to Present for Deceased-donor Organ Transplant
Remember that a transplant surgery is not guaranteed when you are asked to present for deceased-donor kidney transplant. The transplant surgery will be carried out if your score in National Organ Transplant Waiting List is high and you are found medically eligible for the procedure.
