Heart transplant surgery lasts for 5 to 6 hours in average, unless a complication develops.Patients stay at intensive care unit for 3 to 4 days after the surgery and they are then transferred to their special rooms where they stay with a member of family.The donor heart is biopsied to review the risk of tissue rejection after the heart transplant and patients are discharged 15 to 20 days later in average, if no problem is detected.The patients are usually asked to present for follow-up visits in Month 1, Month 3, Month 6 and Month 12.
