This organ has many vital functions, which weighs approximately 1-2 kg and consists of two main lobes -right and left lobes. These functions include: production of file for absorption of fats; removing drugs, chemical substances and alcohol from the blood; storage of the excess glucose as starch; excretion of the waste products with bile; synthesis of protein and cholesterol; blood coagulation; and immunization against infections.

Along with these vital functions, liver is the only organ that regenerates itself.Large parts of liver (60-70% of the liver) can be safely removed from liver transplant donors and patients with liver tumor, as the liver enlarges and reaches to its normal size in a short time.
